Most people don’t like processes. This I know. I’ve heard all of the excuses from “We’re a small business, we don’t need processes” to “I’m too creative. I don’t work that way”. When I tell people they need to implement them into their businesses, it’s because I teach them a little differently.
Not as a something that only corporate America needs, or something that makes your life harder and with added stress. But as something that will actually make your life easier and help to scale your business to numbers you never thought possible without them. Processes are necessary for any business, and any business owner is capable of creating them.
For help determining whether or not you need to create a process for something, here are five things to think about:
- Can this be automated? If you find yourself doing something over and over again that’s manual, think about how you can automate it. For example, if you find yourself writing out thank you cards or emails to customers, set up an email sequence where, in the future, anytime someone makes a purchase it automatically sends out a thank-you to their inbox.
- Can this be delegated? Again, if you find yourself completing a task day-in and day-out and it’s something that somebody else could probably take care of so you can better use your time, delegate the task out. Focus on the bigger projects.
- Do I need to educate somebody? New hires that need training, customers that have never patronized your business before and don’t know what you’re all about; create a process to educate these people.
- Do I need to better connect with somebody? Relating back to educate, connecting better with those around you will only serve you better, so how can you create a process to bring people together whether it’s the customer to you or your employees to your business.
- Am I collaborating well? Think about your vendors and the supply chain that your business works on. How can you streamline things to make everyone’s lives easier?
When I teach people about processes, I tell them to think about whoever you are creating this process for: Where are they starting? Where do you want them to end up? How are you going to get them from A to B?
