Episode 93 – The Truth About Loss

Episode 93 – The Truth About Loss

Podcast

“There is no greater agony than bearing and untold story inside of you.” This quote from the famous author and amazing woman, Maya Angelou, has been playing over and over in my head this past week. My family has experienced a series of tragedies already in 2021, including the loss of my mother-in-law. It got me thinking a lot about the truth about loss and how it is inevitable in anyone’s life, the difference is how we choose to respond to them.

When loss in any degree strikes, whether it’s the life of a loved one or the business you worked years to build up, many of us fall into a state of immobilization. We become so swallowed up by the pain that any future beyond that point seems impossible. In reality, we can choose to let it take over our lives while we sit back in fear and grief, or we can accept the pain and realize the only way things are going to get better is if we make them.

Asking yourself difficult questions in these times can seem so overwhelming, but it’s such an important time to do so. For me, the passing of my husband’s mother led me to look deep and really ask myself what it is I want out of my life. It is short, after all, and I decided I didn’t want to spend any more time on things that don’t serve me or the life I wish to see for myself. Our time here on this planet is the most precious gift any of us will ever receive and to waste that would be tragic.

And the same can be said for all of the business out there that have gone through some form of loss in the past year or so. When things are taken from you or change so drastically that you find yourself not knowing where to turn anymore, that’s the time to really take a breath and a good hard look at where you are, where you want to be, and how you’re going to go about getting there. I truly believe that when one experiences any amount of adversity, there is always a lesson behind it, always a reason why. At first, the reasons might not seem so obvious or there at all. But it’s up to you to dig deep and figure out why the things that are happening to you are, and what you can do to change them.

It’s easy to want to focus on the loss itself and just be angry and frustrated. But all that leaves us with is a negative outlook and stagnancy in anything we do. Adversity arises not to punish us, but to give us a chance to look at things differently. Find where the holes in our lives are and how the things we’ve been attempting to do just aren’t working. We are blessed to have the opportunity to look at ourselves in this way so we can do something about it instead of blaming the world for our problems. We are our own solutions.

As humans, there is far more that unites us than divide us. The more we can sit and figure out what those things are, the better and faster we can persevere through the tragedies we face. Often times we are the thing standing in our own way and it’s as simple as coming to that realization that can get people on track to the lives they only dream about.
