Today’s episode is a little different. Today I’m down in my living room, just finished my workout, and enjoying a cup of coffee. Normally, I record up in my office which has the whole setup I need, but I got a new desk that is being hooked up so here we are, live, on my phone.
I told my podcast editor this week that I’d be sending him over a recording and that it’s going to be a bit rougher than what we normally do but I just needed to get this message out there. I don’t have my usual setup, but that’s okay, we’re going to make this work.
I’ve seen too many people lately fall back into old habits. You’re overwhelmed, functioning in chaos, and going through what I call burn out. And things start to slip up and get forgotten in this state. I’ve been there too, many times. What I’ve learned is how to go from a place of functioning in utter chaos to functioning in opportunity. The trick is to not focus on your current circumstances and all of your current problems, but rather on the future and where it is and who it is you want to be.
Every business right now is experiencing a crazy amount of change and transformations and for most, this is not a positive experience. But there can be no real growth if there is not some kind of discomfort, some struggle or challenge to overcome first. It won’t be easy, but the most important thing to remember through it all is what you stand for. What do you value in life and in your business? The actions you take should always reflect your values, because this is how you start to get that growth you want to see.
When your community sees how you function in a crisis, they are seeing the real you. Holding it all together can be the most difficult thing you have to do, but it is vital to stick to your roots. It may mean losing some revenue, losing employees, but at the end of the day, if you create a business that is a place of equality and good atmosphere and something that can’t be replaced by anything else, that is what will keep your business afloat.
Always have a plan. We have so much time in this world; to get creative and to think about what we want and how to get it, but unless we use this time wisely, it seems to slip away. Without a solid plan each day, decisions start to be made out of haste or fear or frustration and this leads down a bad path.
We want to impact others, right? And our actions are what determine how those around us will be affected. If our actions are negative, the impact we’re putting out there will be, too. Now is the time to stay strong and demonstrate the positive impact you want to put out into the world. Not just in the day-to-day, but moving forward and beyond your current circumstance.
I want to leave you with a little paraphrase of this principle, or metaphor, I heard the other day that I think is so valuable:
We have 3 days to do our part. We have yesterday, take the things we’ve already done that we can learn from. We have today, to plan and execute new ideas. And we have tomorrow, to look forward to and grow towards.
