Your business has been struggling. You’re frustrated, revenue is down, trying to hire and keep decent employees seems impossible, and you’re trying desperately to do all the things to stay afloat. If this sounds like you lately, you need to ask yourself this one question: Does this make my boat go faster?
What? Boat? I know, we’re not sailors here, we’re entrepreneurs. But your boat is your business. And I heard a story once about and Olympic rowing team, and their thought process about their discipline. If something would come up, say a party or a chance for celebration, they would ask themselves: Will this make the boat go faster? If not, they would not do that thing. They had but one focus.
I think this mindset relates back to business ownership in so many ways. When we become overwhelmed with our work, it’s usually because we continue adding more and more on to our plates in hopes that more hours = more success. But added weight will not make the boat go faster. It will only hold it back.
And to help you determine what you need to let go of to make that boat go faster, the first thing you need to do is get super clear on what it is you want to achieve. What does that vision of the future of your dreams look like? If we don’t know what it is we’re working towards, we can’t really make the judgement call on whether or not it will make us faster, or simply be further hindering our growth.
Next, pick out the things that you do really well. Once you do that, you’ll also discover the areas that need work, and the areas that are just wasted time. Once we turn our lights on and map out the path ahead of us, the direction suddenly becomes so much clearer.
