Episode 106 - Working In Your Business or On Your Business

Episode 106 – Working In Your Business or On Your Business?

You can’t work on your business with the same mindset that you have done to work in your business. And too many people think the two are one in the same. I’ve encountered countless individuals, including myself at times, that build their business up to a certain level and think that their job is going to remain the same. When your business grows, as do you.

A few years back when on a call with my mentor, I recall saying to him about how I wanted to achieve so many things and take my business to amazing places, but that I felt so overwhelmed to even think about how. He asked me to tell him all of the things I need to do in a day, being that it was just me running it at the time, and then told me this: “Theresa, you cannot work on your business and bring it to the next level if you have the same mindset, the same capacity, and the same vision you had when you were working to get it started.” That hit me like a ton of bricks. Being an entrepreneur and meeting others who own their own business over the years, I’ve come to realize we all feel this way. We’re all taught that we just need to put our heads down, work harder, and don’t stop until we keel over and burn out. That’s the biggest lie we are told.

When we first start out, we just want to get running and be open and do our thing. Make money and plough forward. But in order to not only remain open, but continue to grow and thrive and soar, our mindsets need to as well. We need to step back from working in our business to be able to work on it.

If you find yourself scrambling day-to-day just to keep daily operations functioning, burning the candle at both ends just to make sure you can make ends meet, or simply working yourself to death for the sake of “putting in the work”, you are working in your business.

If you show up every day as a leader, with a strong and dependable team you built around that have a system of knowledge and common understanding of the businesses grander vision making it essentially run itself so that you can have time to breathe and focus on moving everyone forward, you are working on your business.

Development of any kind is going to require some development on your part, as well. To think that you remain the same person through entrepreneurship is just silly. We are constantly growing and evolving and adapting to the world around us, because honestly, that is what it really takes to build a business that is resilient through anything.

If you find yourself solely working in your business and want to know how to step away from that, I suggest starting with taking a look at what you do each day. Why are you so overwhelmed? Are there menial tasks you have to get done but someone else could probably be doing so you can work elsewhere? Odds are, the answer is probably yes. If you do already have a team of people but things aren’t running how you want them to, is this the right team? Have I properly trained and educated them? Are they just not the right fit for this part? Once you have an established team of people you can count on to give you some relief, the next question becomes that of the vision.

The vision for your business might have changed since you first opened, and that’s okay. Just like you, it evolves. But think about what your version of a successful business looks like. Don’t let your mind shut off the creative part of your brain that is usually in hustle mode. Think about your business in a limitless world. Where do you want it to go? What do you want it to be? Once you know that, how are you going to go about getting there?

Now, not everyone is going to have the answer to that right away. It takes trial and error. But when we allow ourselves to have the time to think and breathe and conjure up an idea on how to make the business better, run smoother, or grow it’s size, the more we can test and implement them into our lives in hopes that it works in our favor. Even if it’s a dud, you can rest assured that you can go back to the drawing board to try again, all the while your business is running itself.

If you haven’t achieved the results that you really want to achieve with your business, I’ve got you covered. I have a masterclass coming up that I’m going to be teaching, and it’s called From Struggling To Profitable. it’s going to be a free, 60-minute workshop that you can attend. And we are going to talk about all of these things so you can go from not having any cash in the bank and being stuck living in current circumstance to being cashflow positive and feeling the possibility in your business .Join me LIVE Tuesday, April 27th at 3pm EST by signing up here!
