Episode 104 – 2 Things You Need to Scale Your Business

The biggest question I get asked is “Theresa, how can I scale my business?”. They want to hear the magic formula or miracle answer that will solve all their problems overnight. And really, the answer is quite simple. You only need two things: the right processes in place and the right people.

If you’ve worked with me before, you know that we build businesses from the inside out. No matter how good you make the external piece look, if the internal piece of your business isn’t fixed, it can’t be a truly successful one.

When it comes to people, we want to pay attention to the culture that we are creating. When people come to work for us, we are inviting them into our world and we want to make sure that it’s one of positivity and inclusivity because when people feel good, they do good work, and that’s good for business. Think about the kind of people you want to be on your team; what traits to they have? What type of people do we want to attract and represent us? Do they believe in the core values of the business? Hard skills can be taught, building a team of inspiring and motivated individuals is what should be your foremost concern when hiring.

Now, the process part. People don’t love this part. It’s boring, it’s not them, they’ve not the time for it. But the truth is quite the opposite. Systems and processes within a business does not have to be rigid and robotic if we don’t want it to. It’s simply a way to streamline things as they already are by making sure that everyone involved in any given operation knows what they’re doing, why, and how. They are the foundation of your business and without them, things can be expected to get a bit chaotic.

Educating, automating, delegating, collaborating, and communicating. When you need to do any of these, a system or process needs to be created. Need to educate a new hire? Set up a process. Need a task delegated out? Set up a process. Want to communicate to your customers what your purpose is? Set up a process. When everyone is on the same page and has a clear understanding of what you do and why, you can really start to move your vision for the future forward and with ease.

When we can put these two pieces together, people and processes, we alleviate a lot of the extra busy-work we get sucked into on a daily basis that can easily be avoided by building a team with a strong foundation that knows their role and it’s importance and carry that through to the outside world. Your business will market itself.
