Episode 114 – Why You Need To Have Your Employees Help Write Your Mission Statement

Do you have a mission statement? Recently, I discovered that, while it may seem like common ground, not everyone does. Myself included, there are many of us who tend to focus just on the top line when first opening our business. We know what we want to do and why we want to do it, but can’t quite put it in to words when we’re only thinking about more sales, the next sale.

But when we don’t have that statement that puts into words what exactly the business stands for and what it’s identity is in the grander scheme, we tend to get lost in the mix. There is no discernable factor setting us aside from the other businesses in our industry.

It comes down to more than the product your sell or the service you provide. A mission statement brings to light the things you value in your life, as an individual, and how you want to use your business to make some kind of difference in this world based on those values. Having something like this written down or verbalized often and communicated out to your staff, your customers, your community will be the best “marketing” you can put out there. When people know who you are, the more they can make the decision of why they frequent your establishment over the rest.

Visualizing your own statement can even help you as a person and your business to grow. It’s something you should look back on often to either see whether or not your actions are aligning with it, or maybe your statement has even changed as everything around you grows. The most important part is actively being aware of what you’re trying to accomplish, why, and that it’s apparent to everyone involved.

And an easy way to help get more people on board with who and what your business is, is to have your employees help you write it. This not only gives them a feeling of trust, being involved in the bigger picture, and creates a sense of ownership and responsibility to their jobs, but leaves you with a team of empowered, motivated individuals that care about what they do.
