Working one-on-one with business owners over the past decade plus some, I’ve noticed that the same questions seem to arise. Most of them centered around three main topics: marketing, employees, and increasing sales.
The main questions I get about marketing is: “How do I market my business with no budget?” And the answer usually lies in that person’s perspective of what marketing really is. It doesn’t have to be paid billboards, Google Ads, or television commercials. What’s at the core of marketing is attracting people to your business, building a relationship with them, and nurturing it so that they come back again and again. No amount of advertisements can do that for you. Sure, they might help the first piece of getting them through the door, but if what’s on the other side isn’t satisfying their needs, that big sign they walk past every day with your name on it won’t mean a thing.
When it comes to employees, I hear: “How do we hire and retain good employees?” Well, it starts with a good leader. Most businesses, especially as of late, fill their positions on the fly. Without the owner taking the time to understand the position that needs filled, what type of person is needed to fulfil the role, and not settle for the first applicant that walks through the door, how can you expect that person to live up to your standards if they are not clear and concise? Really think about and communicate out to all what you want your business to look and run like and how you are going to go about making that a reality. Communication is key in every step of the way.
Once you’ve hired a good fit, however, you still need to maintain a healthy work environment and culture if you want them to stay. Make them feel included in the grander image of the business, encourage them to be creative when necessary, and take the time to hear them out when they voice their concerns. Respect is a two-way street and will benefit all in the end.
And when it comes to money, “How do I increase sales?” is always a big one. The first thing you want to look at is, can you even support that type of growth? Think about building a house, without a foundation or structure, it’ll all come toppling down with enough weight. Your business is the exact same. Having a solid foundation is at the base of any successful business, and without it, without those systems and processes and communication skills and a vision of what you want, it won’t be able to withstand what comes with more business. Build your business from the ground up and focus on the internal and the external profit will follow.
