You might not realize it, but when you look really close at what is holding your business back from achieving great success, sometimes the answer lies in your own daily habits. Now, there are good and bad ones we can all fall into. But what we need to focus on more than any marketing strategy or social media presence is getting into those habits that take us from functioning like an amateur, and functioning like a professional.
The trick to getting into that professional mindset is to first identify where you have been amateurly slipping up. This is where I start to hear a lot of excuses. “I don’t have bad habits”, I’m just too busy”, or “I simply don’t have the time to get done what I need to.” To these people, I like to tell them to ask themselves: In a perfect world, with a perfect and successful business, what did you do differently? I let them think good and hard on this and when they come back to me, they can usually start to pinpoint where they have been holding themselves back through their own amateur habits.
A few examples of amateur habits that even I have been guilty of, at one point or another, are as follows:
- Focusing on money and hustling. All I wanted to do was work long hours and I actually tried convincing myself that being over-worked and stressed out would lead me to more success. This has left me, and countless other entrepreneurs stuck.
- Lack of planning. Maybe you’ve got great ideas and intentions for your business, but if there is no rhyme or reason to your day, your week, your month, you’ll end up going in circles without anything to show for it.
- Fear of failing. Who hasn’t felt this before? It lingers in all of us. Until we put ourselves out there, full-force, we can’t possibly know the outcome. We cannot know what’s right without knowing for sure what’s wrong, right?
There are a ton more examples of amateur habits, these being just a select few. The trick is to figure out which ones you are guilty of, and replace them with professional ones. Instead of focusing on making more money, focus on serving your customer better. Instead of having no plan and winging it, start up a daily to-do list that you can eventually scale to your week, month, etc. Instead of living in fear of failure, live each day with courage and conviction, just as a principle.
When I first start working with new clients, their biggest struggle is always the easy stuff. They think I have this huge, complicated strategy that I’m just going to teach to them and all of their problems will be solved. In reality, the answer is so simple and right in front of them, but they choose not to see it. They want the quick fix and to avoid admitting they’ve done an ounce of wrong. Nobody can be perfect all of the time, and we all have our good and bad days. As soon as you can open your eyes to what is truly keeping you from reaching your goals, the sooner you can get back on the path towards bettering yourself and your business.
