Today, I want to talk about something on everyone’s mind right now: the 2024 election results. Whether the results were what you hoped for or not, as business leaders and entrepreneurs, there’s a lot we can learn from (and a lot we can do in response).
The outcome of the election, and the intensity that surrounded it, can teach all of us this: We, as entrepreneurs, don’t control who sits in office, but we do control how we react, adapt, and move forward. Just like in business, we can’t dictate the final outcome, but we can stay informed, and make strategic decisions to change the world.
Election Results: Remembering What We Can’t Control vs. What We Can
Everyone can agree that the election cycle was long and intense. Ultimately, the election results were beyond our individual control. What we can influence, however, is how we learn, listen, vote, and have a vision for this country. In business, the same principle applies. We might not control the market or the economy, but we can control our vision, our strategy, and our response.
Focus on Unity Post-Election Results
One of the major takeaways from this election season was the reminder that, no matter our political views, we’re all Americans. In business, especially in leadership, we have to create environments where every voice is respected and where differing perspectives can coexist. More than that, I believe we have to celebrate our differences.
I think I’m so passionate about this because when I was growing up, I faced challenges being “different.” I was artistic and creative, and shunned for that. Today, I’m grateful for those experiences, as they taught me to value unique perspectives.
As leaders, we should nurture environments where everyone feels valued, regardless of background, belief, or political stance. After all, these differences can bring about the kind of creativity and innovation that every business needs.
Entrepreneurs Drive Change, No Matter Who’s in Office
Politicians may set policies, but it’s entrepreneurs who build the world. From big tech innovators to small business owners, entrepreneurs have always been the heartbeat of progress, driving innovation, creating jobs, and solving real-world problems. Would Elon Musk and Richard Branson let election results stop them from building their visions? No, and neither should we.
For many of us, this means doubling down on our missions and being clear about the value we bring to our communities. Even when times are tough, small business owners continue to hire, innovate, and support their communities. And while political outcomes may impact certain aspects of business, the drive to create, connect, and make a difference remains squarely within our control.
Focusing on Vision to Lead Through Change
So where do we go from here? We need to have a clear vision. Strong leaders know that their vision must be big enough to inspire not only their team but also the communities they serve. When our businesses have a purposeful vision, they become more than just profit-driven entities — they become forces for good that can drive real societal change.
One way we can bring this vision to life is by embracing diversity, innovation, and technology into our work. For example, building programs that inspire creativity, offering jobs that support families, and supporting community initiatives. When we commit to improving our business from within, we’re better positioned to contribute positively to the world outside.
Moving Forward After Election Results: Optimism Over Negativity
Election results can bring out strong emotions. But lingering in negativity won’t change anything. Instead, let’s focus on what’s next. Let’s focus on promoting policies that enable small businesses to access funding, advocating for fair economic conditions, and embracing inclusivity in our business practices.
As entrepreneurs and leaders, our role is to rise above divisions, avoid letting anger or frustration cloud our vision, and continue moving forward. Change doesn’t come from who’s in office alone; it comes from the entrepreneurs. When we show up with optimism, we set an example for those around us — an example that inspires hope, unity, and possibility.
So the question becomes: Are we going to stay stuck in frustration, or are we going to take positive action? If we stay true to our vision, build our businesses with purpose, and focus on uplifting our communities, then we’ll be contributing to a brighter future for everyone.
