Today, we’re looking at a topic near and dear to my heart: Research and Development (R&D). I started out in the pharmaceutical world where R&D is commonplace, but I’ve learned that Research & Development applies as an important framework for entrepreneurship and small business success, too.
Research & Development: Why It’s Necessary for Innovation
My professional background in molecular biology gave me a front-row seat to the power of research & development. Whether it was replicating DNA or developing groundbreaking treatments for cancer or vaccines, the process was the same:
- Research generates insights and ideas
- Development turns those ideas into tangible results
- Iteration refines and improves the process
This process is the same kind of experimentation we go through in our businesses. It’s a vital step in creativity and innovation, whether you’re creating life-saving medicines or launching a new restaurant concept.
Entrepreneurship is Research & Development
Small business ownership is an ongoing experiment. Every idea you bring to life (whether it’s a new product, a service, or even an event) is part of your research & development process. Yet, many entrepreneurs hesitate to embrace this mindset.
Why? Fear of failure.
This fear leads to playing it safe. We stifle the creativity of our employees (and ourselves) and limit our potential. Leaders might try to control their environment and put strict parameters on everything in order to avoid failure. But when you do this, you also limit your team’s ability to think creatively and contribute to your vision.
What Happens When You Play It Safe
When leaders shrink back, so do their teams. They stop sharing ideas and wait for instructions, turning a vibrant culture into a mechanical process. I saw this in a recent coaching session I had at a fancy dinner event.
The chefs were confined by rigid parameters around their dishes. And guess what happened? They delivered a boring menu that didn’t align with the business’s vision.
Why You Can’t Skip Research & Development
Instead of fearing failure, embrace research & development as part of the entrepreneurial process. When you empower your team to collaborate and explore new possibilities (without trying to control the outcomes), you’ll watch their creativity shine. You’ll raise the limits of what’s possible for your team.
A Lesson from Aesop: The Wind and the Sun
To close out, here’s a story from Aesop’s Fables that beautifully illustrates the power of letting go and letting people shine as a leader:
The wind and the sun were watching a man walking along a path. The man was bundled up in a jacket, scarf, and hat, shielding himself from the chill. The wind, confident in its strength, said to the sun, “I bet I can get him to take off his jacket faster than you can.”
The sun agreed, and the wind went first. It took a deep breath and blew as hard as it could, trying to force the man to remove his jacket. But instead of yielding, the man tightened his jacket, pulled his hat lower, and wrapped his scarf even tighter.
The wind blew harder and harder. But all this did was make the man walk faster, buttoning up his clothes even more firmly.
Then it was the sun’s turn. Instead of force, the sun gently shone down warmth and light. Slowly, the man began to loosen his scarf. As the warmth grew, he removed his hat and then his jacket… not because he was forced to, but because he chose to.
Using R&D to Lead with Empathy
The point? We don’t get results by pushing or forcing outcomes. As leaders, we create lasting change by embracing empathy, compassion, and warmth.
When we wrap our teams in understanding and support, instead of trying to control or coerce them, we create an environment where creativity can flourish, and people feel empowered to make decisions. And we’ll get results that are far greater than we might have imagined.
