I know for myself, I’ve asked myself plenty of times this year: “Am I doing enough?”. It’s hard to know if what you are doing is really ever enough, especially in this past year that has been filled with extra doubt and uncertainty.
Many clients and friends of mine have come to me over the past year with this same question. They feel like they are doing everything they possibly can just to keep their head above water and it’s leaving them overwhelmed, drained, and feeling like are getting nowhere. But what I see when I experience this feeling or see others experiencing it as well, is that we are only looking at our external results when we think this way. We look at our numbers of sales and people through the door and start to immediately think we must be doing something wrong. The truth is, and I tell this to people all of the time, is that we can’t base anything on external circumstances. Whatever is happening to us on the outside, we cannot let affect who we are and what our business is at it’s core.
What I’ve come to realize over this past year is that with all of the negative things that might have been thrown our way, probably one of the best things that has come from this new way of conducting business is how it exposed a lot of poor management going on in all areas. It helped to shine a light on the places in our business that maybe we’ve been pushing to the back burner or hadn’t even realized was something holding us back. We now have this extremely unique opportunity to almost re-invent and rebuild from the ground up what we used to know as our business and transform it into what we really want it to be. How often do we get chances like that? Not very.
This is a time to reflect. Look back on how you’ve been running things and pinpoint the areas that no longer serve you or just aren’t working. You have the opportunity to implement new ideas and new systems that you maybe only ever just thought about. Some things may flourish and others may flop; but being given this chance to experiment with a little trial and error would be foolish to waste.
We can sit in self pity and wait for someone or something to come “save” us or wish and pray that things go back to how they used to be. Or we can stop blaming the world around us and come to the realization that we have more power over things than we think; the way we show up every day, what we are doing to keep moving forward towards our goals. The question of whether or not you are doing enough stems from looking only at the things you aren’t accomplishing and not giving any credit to all of the things that you are getting done each and every day. You are doing enough, and you are enough. Just keep looking ahead to that future vision you have for your business and the rest will act accordingly.
