Good Leadership Qualities

Episode 30 – Why is change so hard?

Hello everyone! I am so excited for today, I have my coffee, my notes and I am ready to go! I am super passionate about today’s topic, so I don’t know if I will need my notes, but they are here anyway.

Before we get into this, I want to let you all know about a Master Class I have starting soon! Are you a restaurant owner who is feeling burnt out, working over 40 hours a week, or you’re in a plateau? Then this class is really for you! Theresa Cantley’s Business Growth Formula class goes over the three big blocks that hold business owner back, and the five common mistakes that are made, as well as the NUMBER ONE thing you need to do to build your business again. I hated school, so these classes won’t be boring. They will be uplifting, and fun and I can’t wait! Join me here!

Okay… onto today’s topic, why is change so hard? Everyone goes through this! I mean there is that saying, change is the only constant in life! Yet it is so hard for people to change. One of the first things I focus on when I meet with a client is to set our goals and focus on a process to achieve those goals. We dig into where all the struggles and blocks are in a specific business and we work to fix them! I don’t scrap any old goals–we make changes to make it better!

For example, I have one client whose team is fighting these goals really hard. The sues-chef and the pastry-chef just didn’t want to write their goals–they were both afraid that if they wrote these goals it would change who they were as people! That isn’t the point at all! This is to make them the best version of themselves so they can give more.

People experience this every day in their personal lives too! I get asked regularly why it’s so hard to change, no matter if it is a limiting belief, a business change, or even a routine change. These are the three reasons I have come up with as to why people fight change so hard.

  1. It challenges the norm. Guys, we all get comfortable with how things are working. Maybe you have achieved a level of success, or you are just comfortable where you are and you reject the change. But you guys! We have talked about this before, what got you to the point you are at is not going to get you to the next point. Yes, it is going to be hard, you are going to hit new challenges, but you know what? The harder the challenge, the better the reward! Change is going to get hard when you challenge the norm, you need to push through that.
  2. Change challenges what people believe to be true. This goes hand in hand with that first reason. I see this a lot with my local businesses. We focus on what makes my client’s business special and different. This helps us create an iconic signature experience. More times than not, I get this pushback from the leadership team. I hear these self-limiting beliefs of “we are just this or we are just that” Instead if they think outside of the box, believe in themselves and focus on making them more than “just” then we challenge that mindset and begin to see change. Trust me it is easier to stay uncomfortable in your untruth than challenge that and get uncomfortable for a short time to be able to bring about your dream! Your beliefs become your reality, if you are always saying that you are just this or just that, then yes, that is where you are going to stay. Manifest your reality!
  3. Lastly, it is hard for people to think differently and think that they can be better and different. It is easier for us to remember what life is like now and be comfortable in our uncomfortableness. It is a human fault. But there is a way to change your mindset and embrace change and create the best version of yourself. What you resist will persist. Let’s jump back to that sues-chef I mentioned earlier. He is resisting this change and what is happening is he isn’t showing up as the leader he needs to be, and other people are picking up what he should be doing. What he is resisting is persisting. And it is hurting him and his co-workers.

So, What can you do to make change easier and create your best life and a stronger business? I have three ways, and trust me this isn’t an easy process! It wasn’t easy for me and that is okay, keep these in your back pocket and it will make it a little easier.

  1. You have to commit and decide that you want to do something new. When I start working with people I say to them that they NEED to commit to the process. You need to let go of what you have always done and you need to stay open to what may come. It may not look how you expected but it will move you in the right direction. But, once you are committed to that change you will see things start to change because you are open to it. Your life will reflect what you believe for yourself. It is going to get uncomfortable but I promise it will be amazing!
  2. You need to lean into that fear. Like I said this won’t be an easy process, but if you lean into the change and you visualize what you want your reality to look like… then all the sudden it starts to come true. My restaurant clients have this common fear that they will need to work these really long days and not have the personal freedom to do what they want to do. I understand this fear, but it is perpetuating the idea and they are on a hamster wheel because they don’t change anything and keep falling into the same self-set traps! Instead, they focus on where that fear is coming from and what they need to do to change it, they can get out and see that freedom instead of being stuck.
  3. You need to give up on knowing the outcome. Instead, you need to focus on the action. When we are trying to change and we are working on new things it is easy to fall into the trap of needing to see a result before you start… guys, that isn’t how it works! You need to focus on the change and then send positive energy toward it and commit to it and you will see the results. You can’t control everything! So instead put your energy into your current change, that current action and see the results over time. Things will fall into place, it will get easier.

Let your change move you forward. The more you resist your change the harder it will be. Change can be easy! Business can be easy! Growth can be easy! But, only if we believe it to be true.
