How Do You Define Success In Your Own Words?

One of the first things we work on when you work with me “one to one” is gaining clarity on this one question.  What does success mean to you?  Society has always defined success one way, and a lot of people tie that definition to having money. But, think about it; there are so many people in the world who have tons of money and are just miserable.  Over the years, I’ve been through so many trials, personally and professionally, and I’ve learned so much. I left a corporate job (and good money) to follow my passion of being an entrepreneur, first with a retail store, and then with my second business in marketing and brand strategy.

When I worked in corporate, I always used to be chasing and trying to achieve more. I was chasing after goals, and chasing after what I thought was “success.”

When I became an entrepreneur, things changed.  I went through a transformation of completely redefining what success means to me, based on what I’ve been through in starting a business, as well as things that have happened in my personal life. Success to me now…  especially now that we’re ready to become grandparents … has nothing to do with money. It has more to do with how I want to feel each and everyday.  What my perfect day would look like, what I would do, where I would go, who I would work with.  Feeling inner peace, and being totally and completely authentically me, and loving myself. Success is definitely not feeling that constant craziness and not feeling that chaos that runs through my head, and not that swirl that happens when you get on everybody else’s agenda and you’re not on your own.  No thank you!

For me, having what I need, which is love and being fully alive, and being able to make a difference in the lives of others, that’s what it means to me. Feeling inner peace, joy and love every day.  Having the freedom in my day to do what I love, when I want and with who I want.  Now that’s what success means to me.  It doesn’t matter what society thinks.  Define success for YOU, no one else.  Come up with your own definition of success on your own terms, and define success in your own words and keep these 5 things in mind:

  1. How would you feel if you were “successful”?
  2. What would your perfect day look like if you had “success” (literally draw it out on paper and visualize it)?
  3. How would it NOT feel to be successful (this actually helps us define what success means to us because we are clear on what it doesn’t mean)?
  4. If money weren’t an option what would you absolutely LOVE to do?
  5. What do you need to “let go” of to be successful?

Keep shining your light!-
