When I bring up culture, I’m not talking about heritage. I’m talking about the culture one creates within their business. And it’s not something that just sort of happens overnight that we adopt and let define us. It happens slowly over time with the energy we bring with us, where our focus lies, and our true intentions for opening in the first place. All these pieces that slowly change and evolve as you figure them out is the culture you are creating.
I’ve heard all of the excuses and complaints from business owners countless times over the years; “We can’t hire good people, we can’t retain good employees, we can’t get people to do their jobs.” But what every single one of these people are not paying any attention to is the culture they’ve created. How they show up every day and push a certain message across can have lasting and detrimental effects on your business if they are not ones of positive nature and bettering the business. If you come into your business each day with a bad attitude and a sole focus on getting the most profit at any cost, well you probably aren’t going to attract people that are going to help you to grow.
It all starts within. But what I’ve noticed is that many will look externally when building a business. They focus their time and energy on marketing or creating a website, and none on the internals of their business that makes you what you are at your core. You can have all the best marketers out there and spend tons on ads, but if the business itself doesn’t have a culture that exudes exactly what your intentions are, success is near impossible. You might be able to keep your doors open, but bringing it to that next level requires you to really dig deep at your core values and bring them to light for the world to see.
I have some questions you can ask yourself that will help you to start to define what your unique business culture is:
- What is it I’m trying to do here? What do I want to accomplish with this business? What does it stand for? These questions help us to shed light on our core values and the vision we have for our business so that we can start to set intention.
- Who do I need to be to bring these intentions to light? What energy do I need to bring and how do I need to show up every day? If you want your business to be one of positivity and happiness, then you need to show up that way. If you come in every day stressed, angry, and overwhelmed, how can you expect the rest of the people there to feel any different?
