Leading in the Spirit of Phygitality: Using Technology to Deepen Human Connection

A confident female CEO stands in a modern office, arms crossed, symbolizing executive leadership for a growth-focused podcast.

We’re living in a time when technology is advancing faster than ever – and it’s not going anywhere. From the rise of AI to automation replacing human jobs, it can all feel a little overwhelming. If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Is my job safe? Am I falling behind if I’m not using AI yet?” – you’re not alone.

In this episode of The C-Suite Mentor, I share how I really feel about technology and introduce you to a concept I’ve developed over the years: The Spirit of Phygitality.

The Fear and Fascination of AI

Love it or hate it, AI is here to stay. And while it’s making headlines for replacing roles and streamlining operations, there’s still a lot of misunderstanding and fear surrounding how to use it wisely. I’ve seen AI used both beautifully and badly. The goal isn’t to replace humans, but to enhance what we do.

You can tell the difference between something created by AI and something infused with real, human thought and emotion. That missing human connection matters.

What Is Phygitality?

You may have heard the term “phygital” – a blend of physical and digital experiences – but The Spirit of Phygitality is all about using digital tools to build deeper human connection, not replace it.

At its core, Phygitality blends the innovation of digital tools with the humanity of live experiences to create better leadership, culture, and connection within organizations.

It’s a framework that helps bridge the gaps – between leaders and teams, businesses and customers, people and processes – by using technology to enhance the very things that make us human.

Using Technology Wisely in Business

Be smart about how you use AI. It’s not about jumping on every trend – it’s about using the right tools in the right way. I use tools like Copilot and My Story Pro to improve my work without compromising data security or human creativity.

I believe digital technology can enhance human connection when we use it to research, solve problems, and see things we might miss. But it can’t replace the soul of human creativity.

Phygitality in Action

Adopting a phygital mindset helps businesses rebuild trust and connection, bridge  communication gaps, boost employee engagement, and stay agile in the face of challenges. In a world where stress and disconnection are on the rise, using technology to deepen connection is essential.

Digital Done Right: Empowerment Through Purpose

One of my favorite use cases involved an employee who had just immigrated and spoke little English. Rather than seeing a barrier, my team saw an opportunity for growth. They created videos to teach tasks visually, used translation tools to support language learning, and empowered him with clear, visual systems.

The result was a more confident employee with big dreams, and a workplace that made those dreams feel possible. This is the Spirit of Phygitality at work!

When Technology Is Misused

But of course, intention matters. One manager used digital tracking tools to micromanage and control rather than support their team. The same tools that can build connection can just as easily break it – when used without empathy, trust, or purpose.

Leading With Soul in the Digital Age

Leading in the Spirit of Phygitality means calling out where we’ve led without intention, and calling up who we really are. It’s the bridge between structure and soul.

Whether you’re managing a team, building a company, or reimagining your systems, you don’t have to choose between being digital and being human. The two can – and should – work together to heal, connect, and empower.
