In today’s world, workplace incivility is on the rise. It’s not just about differing opinions anymore – people are being shamed for their beliefs in ways that create division and tension in the workplace. As business owners and leaders, we have the power to change this dynamic by fostering a culture of respect, inclusion, and open dialogue.
I recently read an article about the increasing levels of workplace incivility and had a conversation with my assistant about how this divide is impacting small business owners. She shared an experience at a local coffee shop where employees were so caught up in their division that they couldn’t even get her order right. This scenario highlights a larger issue: when we focus too much on the turbulence around us, we lose sight of our mission as a team. We must create a positive work environment where people feel safe and valued.
The Role of Entrepreneurs in Changing the Narrative
Throughout history, the people who make a real impact in the world – those who drive change – are entrepreneurs, creators, and visionaries. As small business owners, our superpower is our ability to start change from within. If we can create a strong, respectful culture inside our businesses, we can influence the world beyond our walls.
Unfortunately, many workplaces today are breeding environments of fear and groupthink. Employees worry about speaking up, stepping into leadership roles, or even trying new things for fear of being rejected, shamed, or criticized. This fear-driven culture stifles innovation and discourages growth. Instead, we need to embrace a mentor mindset – one that values sharing knowledge, fostering collaboration, and encouraging open communication.
How to Foster a Safe and Inclusive Workplace
So, how do we bring people together when there is so much division? And how can we create a culture where our teams feel safe, even when opinions differ? Here are four key strategies:
1. Listen More Than You Speak
In today’s fast-paced world, truly listening to your team can be transformative. Take time to check in with employees, ask how they’re doing, and genuinely listen to their concerns. This doesn’t mean engaging in workplace drama – it means creating an open-door environment where people feel heard and valued.
2. Diversity Wins
Differences in opinion should be seen as strengths, not threats. When teams embrace diverse perspectives, they foster creativity and drive innovation. However, this only works when disagreements are met with respect and curiosity rather than hostility. Make it clear that your workplace is a safe space for open discussion without fear of shaming or exclusion.
3. Confidence Comes from Trying
We want to build confidence with our people – and confidence comes from trying. Trying comes from taking action. The more we give people the ability to try something new – like speaking, using their voice, or leading – the more they’ll gain confidence and be willing to share their ideas and perspectives.
4. Build Connection from Within
We need to see our team members as people, and understand what makes each of them different. Instead of zooming in on peoples’ mistakes or labels based on the way they voted, for instance, we need to zoom out and look at their unique backgrounds and strengths. When we stop ourselves from focusing on their mistakes, they’ll have the confidence to share when they do make mistakes or need help.
Creating a Workplace That Inspires
Workplace culture isn’t just about policies or mission statements – it’s about everyday interactions. When you cultivate a culture of listening, respect, and inclusivity, you create an environment where people feel safe to contribute, innovate, and grow.
In a world that often feels divided, small business owners have a unique opportunity to foster connection and collaboration. By leading with empathy and encouraging open dialogue, we can build workplaces that inspire – not just within our businesses, but in the world beyond.
Are you ready to take the first step toward creating a more respectful and inclusive workplace? Start by listening, leading with integrity, and embracing the power of small business to make a big impact.
