Small Steps, Big Impact: How Small Business Leaders Can Change the World

In today’s rapidly shifting global landscape, business leaders – especially small business leaders – are faced with challenges that go far beyond the numbers of their business.

The world is at a pivotal moment. We’re witnessing widespread economic, political, and social upheaval, and their ripple effects touch all of us. In today’s episode, we’re doing something different. We’re looking at the role small business leaders can play in healing a hurting world.

The World is Hurting

It’s impossible to turn a blind eye to the global unrest we’ve all seen in recent years. Whether it’s the war in Ukraine, conflicts in the Middle East, or economic struggles, our world is hurting.

But instead of focusing on the heaviness today, we’re going to focus on solutions. You might think I’m crazy, but I believe that small business owners have a unique opportunity to create positive change. Change not just within their organizations, but in the world at large.

The Power of Small Actions

I’ve realized that I’m an empath. I’m deeply affected by the world’s turmoil. But I’ve also realized the profound impact of small, consistent actions.

Small business owners are positioned to drive worldwide change because of their ability to connect deeply with the people around them.

I’m barely 5 feet tall and 120 pounds. When I used to study martial arts, my grandmas would tell me “Small is your superpower,” because I was agile and could move and adapt quicker than the giants I was fighting. I believe this is true with small businesses as well.

Small businesses are uniquely capable of pivoting quickly and embracing innovation. Small businesses can be agents of change by fostering connection, creativity, and collaboration within their teams. When business owners focus on cultivating healthy company cultures, the ripple effects can extend far beyond the walls of their business.

The Butterfly Effect of Leadership

It’s like the Butterfly Effect: small actions can create a wave of change that affects the world. I have connections with people in Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and Dubai. Maybe my change in the world will be the way that I check on them and pray for them. Maybe it will be one step to making an impact, so we can start healing these atrocities that we’ve created on humanity.

Now, more than ever, small business owners have the opportunity to make an impact. By focusing on what happens within their companies, they can drive change that ripples outward, influencing their communities, their industries, and perhaps even the world. The time to lead with purpose and empathy is now.

4 Big Ideas for Small Business Leaders to Make an Impact in Our World

Here are 4 big ideas I want to leave you with to help you as a small business leader make an impact in our world.

1. Sustainability

Small businesses have the power to foster sustainability – not just environmentally but socially. We should emphasize caring for people, the planet, and profits, in that order. The ripple effect of helping one individual can lead to greater impacts, and potentially change communities on the other side of the world. When we build a business model centered on sustainability, it helps leave the planet better for future generations.

2. Diversity

We need diversity in experiences, beliefs, and perspectives. This diversity leads to innovation, which allows businesses to find new solutions to challenges. Without diversity, businesses stagnate. Bringing in diverse backgrounds helps create fresh ideas and better problem-solving, which makes it essential for any thriving business.

3. Agility

Small businesses are uniquely positioned to pivot and adapt swiftly when faced with challenges. Unlike large corporations, small businesses can shift gears quickly. Agility was particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many businesses transitioned from in-person interactions to virtual ones almost overnight.

4. Scalability

I don’t just mean in profits and size – I mean scaling your impact, influence, and your message. Small businesses have the power to amplify their message and vision, and connect with people locally and globally. When you streamline your processes, you can free up time to foster deeper connections.

Small is Your Superpower

You as a small business leader have the power to make worldwide change. You’re able to be agile, sustainable, diverse, and scalable, and you can do a lot to help the world become a better place, one small step at a time.
