Hello everyone, I hope you are doing fabulous today. I wanted to take a few minutes to talk about how, every once in a while you get into a bit of a slump, or you lose your mojo. You’re flowing along and you’re so inspired and motivated, and then “Wham!” you kind of get into a bad mood and lose all motivation. Sometimes you can snap right out of it in two seconds. Other times, it’s hard to get it back again and keep moving. In those times where you can’t really snap out of it, what do you do?
I get asked this question a lot. I am a marketing and business development coach and I work with people who are small business owners, as well as people who want to start a business and aren’t really sure what to do to move it forward. Other people I work with have a business, but feel stuck. Whether you’re a stay-at -home mom, you’re in corporate America, or you have your own business, all of us have periods where you just don’t feel inspired, and you have to figure out how to snap out of it.
I have a few really easy tips for you today, things that I use in my own life to pull myself out of a slump. Tip number one: The first thing I do is get moving. As soon as I start to feel that slump, as soon as you start to feel that energy going, recognize it and don’t let it drag. Get up and get moving. Put your sneakers on, or go out in your high heels if you have to! Whatever you can do. It always helps to get outside and go for a walk if you can. Get the oxygen flowing, get your blood pumping, run up and down the stairs if you have to, get up from your desk, stretch, and move around. As soon as you get moving, it gets those endorphins flowing, which puts you into a better mood. If you’re running up and down stairs, everyone will think you are crazy, but that’s okay. It’s unique, and unique is beautiful.
The second thing: Get yourself a good go-to list of music that gets you pumped, gets you rocking and rolling. If you saw my list, you’d laugh. It’s a mixture of hip-hop to jazz music to oldies to Motown. Everybody’s got either one song or a list of songs, or maybe you have a favorite group. If you still listen to CDs, you might even have a CD or you might even have a favorite record, if you have a record player. Or go with the modern stuff, like Spotify, Pandora, itunes, whatever you use. You can always put your earphones in and get out there and start walking, get your tunes going and you will feel great.
The third thing, which you can write down if you have paper around, or you can just think about it while you’re exercising, is, what are the things in your life that you are grateful for? You can’t be grateful and be in a bad mood. It just doesn’t happen. Maybe it’s like a universal law. You can’t do it. So start thinking about the things that you are grateful for. It could be, “I’m so grateful for the coffee I had this morning,” or, “I’m so grateful for the delicious sandwich I just had,” or “I’m grateful for all the blessings God has given me in my life.” Gratitude could also come in the form of sending a text or note to somebody that you care about just to thank them for their friendship. When you start to express gratitude and thanks, it immediately lifts your energy. I don’t care how sad you feel, as soon as you start to say to yourself, “I choose to see this situation differently. I choose to let go of the sadness. I’m so very grateful for… my beautiful children, running water, or the heat in my house,” the more you can feel your energy lift and you’ll start to come out of the slump.
Those are three tips I use in my own life. We all have bad days, we all have bad moments. I use these strategies several times a week. I am very positive by nature, but we all get frustrated. Just three things to remember: get out, get moving, have your tunes, your music, and express gratitude.
I’m going to add in one bonus just for you: I love to teach people how to create an inspiration file… It’s a list of people, quotes, podcasts, my success stories that inspire me and why. When I go through difficult times, that’s when I pull it out. I keep a list of different people that I read about, or different mentors of mine, or inspiring events that happen. I pull this file out and it helps me to remember… because what inspires me about those people is actually a reflection of the things I have within myself. I’m very inspired by philanthropic efforts, inspired by people who are extremely creative and come up with new ways to do things. The inspiration file always brings me back to the inspiration behind my why… why I’m doing this, why I’m a marketing and development coach. Inevitably, no matter how much I find myself in a slump, especially when I look at the inspiration file, it brings me back to my why.
I do believe when you do these things it will bring YOU back to your why. Whatever your why is. And then you’re going to feel great and you’re gonna say, “I was in a bad mood?” You’ll forget what you were in a bad mood about. I hope that these tips helped you. These are the things that I do. And I hope the next time you’re in slump, you’ll remember these things and try them.
Let your light shine bright!
