Someone recently asked me what was the biggest lesson I’ve learned in so far in my business this year.
It’s actually something I’ve learned in previous years but I’ve had a different perspective about it this year. The one thing I’ve changed my perspective on (which has changed my business) is taking responsibility… full responsibility for everything that happens in my business.
What that means is I’ve stopped thinking that once I achieve goals or have a product with thousands of people in it, then I will be successful.
Instead, taking responsibility for everything that happens in my business shifted my focus to actually being that successful, confident entrepreneur first and from there, focused work comes in.
Focused work takes precedence over just filling my schedule with appointment after appointment and not taking ownership of the work that really needs to get done.
A lot of people don’t want to step into that responsibility because there’s a lot of fear behind it. Taking responsibility means actually owning mistakes and saying, “I was the cause for this” or “I didn’t show up and therefore things didn’t happen”.
Over the years, while sitting down and talking with many people about breakdowns that have happened in their businesses, I find a lot of breakdowns are the result of people not wanting to take responsibility for being and doing. All they want is to have the things and if they don’t have them, well then it’s someone else’s fault.
When you can really take responsibility for absolutely everything that happens in your life and in your business, you take responsibility for the vision that you have. You take responsibility for the difference you want to make and the impact you want to make. When you can fully take responsibility for making the change in the world you want to make, then you can really step into being the person you need to be and doing the things you need to do to achieve the success you want to achieve.
The importance of taking responsibility was my biggest lesson and shift of perspective that I’ve had this year. Because of that, the trajectory of my business has changed substantially and it comes from one, simple thing – taking responsibility for my vision.
