Welcome back! Thanks for your interest in my story, “How I left Corporate to be a Multi-passionate Entrepreneur”! In case you missed Part 1 and just to catch you up, I knew from my childhood on that I was extremely creative, and didn’t really fit into a box. I’ve always had my own style. But I needed a job, so I went to college for business and entered Corporate America. The longer I was in Corporate America, the more my creativity and spirit got squelched. Corporate is great for some people, and I know people who love it there…. For me, every day I would dread going to work. I worked long hours. Sometimes I’d work 60 hours a week, nights and weekends. I was sacrificing being with friends, building relationships, and SO MUCH MORE. I was sacrificing my creativity, my passion and strength to help other people do amazing things.
To escape from our corporate boredom, in 2011 my friend and I decided to open up a retail store while we were working full time. Our vision was to sell handcrafted artisan accessories, such as jewelry, handbags, and scarves. For a while, it was great, to help these artisans bring life to their vision and get their voice out there. And it felt great. It felt alive. I had something to do that was making a difference in the world. Then I started feeling like, I’m not so sure about this retail thing. I love helping people and I love having my own business, but being confined to a retail space, especially during holiday times, wasn’t sitting right. But I was getting closer to connecting to my truth…
I did all the marketing for the store. Everything that I ended up learning I taught myself from scratch. At the corporation I worked for, I started a marketing program from scratch. I taught myself graphic design. And people started asking me to design logos for them, and that was the beginning. That was the beginning to connecting. I started to feel like, “Oh my gosh, I’m breaking out of this mold and I am able to be myself and be creative and innovative again.”
I became a marketing consultant, designing logos, postcards, and business cards. Business cards are the easiest thing, but you’ve got to start somewhere! I ended up leaving Corporate America. I started learning more and more. I already had business experience, marketing experience, and systems experience. So it started gaining momentum. One day both my business partner and I decided to close our retail store, and it was okay because I had this consulting business that I was moving forward with and, to this day, I absolutely love. It really is what I am passionate about.
