Episode 81 – Learning How to Take “Shift” Seriously | A conversation with Anthony Trucks

This morning on my Instagram, I was talking about how I created this fail strategy that I centered around how I was going about finding and reaching out to potential guests for my podcast. I would message different people and got a ton of “No’s” or no response at all. I finally reached out to Anthony Trucks after a while of being a follower, online and in real life, and he agreed to join me on this week’s episode.

Anthony helps people to realize a kind of identity within themselves. Who are you when you’re not thinking about who you are? He was given into foster care at just three years old, which he says is where he first experienced having to figure out his own identity. Who am I? Where do I fit in? Why do I matter? These were a few questions he would ask himself a lot throughout his childhood.

Though he bounced from house to house and family to family, one constant in his life was football. At first, he wasn’t exactly the best on the team. He played and failed for years until he decided to just give up and walk away. It wasn’t until he heard the very excuse he was using to not play football said aloud that it hit him. He didn’t want to give up, that wasn’t going to be him. He returned to play the sport he loved a year later, but this time with drive to be better and to not give up when things got tough.

“What you create, creates you.” A quote that stuck with Anthony, teaching him that you can try anything. You can try, but until you create something, until you go through a process of ups and downs and finalizing and perfecting, you haven’t truly created something. It takes time, and it’s ugly, but that’s what it takes. You make a shift in your identity without really realizing it and when you do that, you create amazing things.

If you give you give every last ounce of energy you have into something, without time for rest and reflection, you get lost. You don’t know who you are because your identity has become consumed by this thing, whether it be a relationship, a job, a child. Who are we when we aren’t consumed with that thing? It can be very hard for a lot of people to come to that realization and cope with it.

Learning to move on from whatever has been taking all of your energy or handle it differently is all in your own identity. When you look at successful people, quite a few of them started from very little. When you ask them how they turned nothing into something, it’s usually along the lines of a simple change in mindset. Anthony began looking into individual identity and what it’s role is in the success of these people. What he found was that people fight for what they think they deserve. If you don’t believe in yourself and set yourself to a lower standard, you won’t really fight for anything more than that. You’re holding yourself back simply because you think you don’t deserve, or can’t do any better.

There is something called an identity gap that Anthony speaks frequently about. It basically states that the only thing standing between your current identity, who you are today and how that version of yourself operates, and the identity of the person you want to be and has the things you desire. As soon as we realize that a shift in mindset is all it takes to fill that gap and finally be the person we always wanted to be is when we begin that new identity. It’s not about what you were given or not given, how you were brought up or the things that happened to you in your life. Those are not the things that define our futures. What does is how we choose to look at our future and recognizing and following through with the things we need to do to get there.

Anthony uses a method to help people learn to become the best version of themselves and the phases are See, Shift, Sustained. First, you see what needs to change. You analyze where you are and where you want to be and what needs to be done to get there. Next, we must shift into the mindset of this person we want to be. What we’ve been doing hasn’t been working, so what needs to change in how we operate and think? This is where the work we must put in comes into play. Shifting a mindset is no easy task. It may take longer than you expected but if you stay on the right path, your success will always come. Lastly, the sustain phase. Plenty of people achieve things without really knowing how they actually did it. It could be by luck or by random events, but until we learn and have it engrained in our minds to sustain a certain way of thinking and operating, we can’t continue to be successful. Always be in this state of wanting and working towards bettering yourself. There is no real “finish line”, but a lifetime of sustaining that state of mind.
